Roland Stang never intended to become the caretaker of thirty abandoned children. He was just looking for a place to get out of the rain. His plan was to lay low and allow the world to reset itself after a world wide economic collapse. But, things do change. An orphan himself from an early age, the former soldier can't simply walk away and leave the children he finds. Especially once he realizes what a sorry lot of adults is nominally in charge of the group in the warehouse he's taken shelter in.

But now, he's got his hands full, and then some. He has to find a home for those children, and a way to feed, clothe, and educate them. All while protecting them from people who would prey on them in one way or another, and while protecting his own back from an angry woman who apparently hates him just because. Her only redeeming feature as far as Roland is concerned? She wants to protect the children as much as he does.

Leading a handful of teens and a busload of orphaned children, Roland sets out to find a safe haven for them. Along the way he'll make friends, enemies, and the odd mistake or two. Or more.

Roland isn't exactly parenting material, either. With problems of his own to deal with, maybe taking on so much extra responsibility wasn't the smartest thing he's ever done. Then again, Roland has always been stubborn.

Roland Reluctant Paladin eBook NC Reed

Another very good story with logical twists and turns, medium action and a young man who takes on the responsibility of becoming the protector of the young and weak. This story is about the overwhelming obstacles in which our protagonist, Roland, must overcome. Mr. Reed writes this story with realism in a time where society has fallen apart. There are good people and bad people...the bad being those who would take advantage of orphaned kids, to make them subject to their own self-centerd and devious ways. But Roland would not have any of it. Roland takes action, makes decisions and executes plans, all for the sake of the kids...those he chose to take under his wings and protect them at all costs.

This story is another N. C. Reed page turner...just like "Odd Billy Todd". Another great yarn with lots of action.

One of the things I like and enjoy about Mr. Reed as an indy author is that; So far, his stories (books) are single stand-alone novels in great length and he brings them to a final conclusion, instead of stretching them out to continued series after series after series. *sigh* For an almost 700 page novel, for $2.99, the reader gets their money's worth from Mr. Reed. This is one of the reasons I follow this author. When he presents a work, it's all inclusive and one knows it's not going to be 120 pages here, another 150 pages there and strung out to 12 freaking episodes, chapters, series books...whatever, and then be charged $2.99 and up for EACH continued series...milking it for all it's worth. I am so over the kinds of authors who can't seem to put together more than 90 pages for $5.99...are you kidding me! Anyway, I admire Mr. Reed for his willingness to write a story to its end, instead of following the normal formula of series chapters. BZ to you, Mr. Reed.

The only negative I have about this book is; Mr. Reed needs to either hire a good editor or take measures to proofread his work before putting it out there. There are so many misspelled words, use of wrong words for the context, missing letters from words...etc, etc. This became quite annoying and distracting, even though the story line kept me turning the pages. I truly like this author. I believe he is a great story teller, albeit, the lack of editing. Mr. Reed...please focus on spelling and grammar, for by doing so, your hard work would receive greater praise, from me anyway.

Even so, I recommend this read if this genre is your interest.

Roland Reluctant Paladin eBook NC Reed Reviews

Sorry, couldn’t help it. <grin> I’m sure many won’t know what I’m talking about, but fellow old timers will.

Let’s face the fact that N.C. Reed is a born storyteller. He may not have the repetitive skills of someone like Tom Clancy or <gasp> Nora Roberts, but his stories are just as entertaining and exciting as any they have written.

Having said that, the lack of an editor made me give Roland a four instead of a five. Words in the wrong place, loose instead of lose, nothing really shocking, but enough to be a bit distracting.

Would love to see a sequel about Roland (Paladin) and Susan someday, but only if both survive the book. I’m old, and it’s hard to take favorite characters dying in the end.
I was surprised that I liked this book. Normally, not a huge fan of apocalyptic disaster stories, this one focused not so much in the "what" that happened, but more on the human aspects of "now what?". In fact, the reader is never told exactly what it was that caused the end of life as was previously known, or how widespread it is outside the US. It dealt more with human reaction, resourcefulness, goodness and kindness in the midst of horror, mass chaos and base human behavior. We see within the small enclave of Roland's survivors the wide gamut of human emotions and behavior that would likely occur after a life-changing cataclysmic event. The Urban Dictionary defines "Paladin" as "...a class of Warrior that is fully devoted to kindness and ridding the Universe of Evil. They are very religious, and have an extremely strict honor code, as well as a soft spot for children and animals. In combat, a Paladin with a cause is almost impossible to defeat." Therin lies the complex mental makeup and moral code that is Roland Stang. There is definitely a sequel here, if not already in the works. On a technical note, the editing should have been better, and the number of misspelled words that slipped through was somewhat annoying. All in all, a nice read for a change of pace. I have to add that this book was offered at a reduced price and that is what enticed me to take a chance on a subject and unknown author I would normally have skipped over. Glad I took that chance.
Despite the poor grammar, editing and proofreading, this could have been a pretty good book. I ran out of patience when everyone seemed to slip into some cornball "hillbilly" dialect. That kind of thing can go a long way fast. It wasn't even accurate. There were some inconsistencies in character development, with the main character supposedly going from foster home to foster home, then later saying he was from the country. In my experience, cities have lousy foster systems and country folks tend to take care of their own. Just made some of the ideas confusing to mix things up like this. The overall story line was good. Way too simplistic at times. And it all seemed way too easy. Even with all the killing and gun battles, and pandemics, I never felt any depth or sincerity. And the ending was from out in left field. Huh? Seems like this started as one thing and wound up as something else. Don't get me wrong, I still recommend you take a chance on this. Just know that it could have benefited from another set of eyes and a good red pencil before publication.
